Bedford is a South Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with a disability or disadvantage.
We are the State’s largest and most diverse provider of employment, training, residential services and life-skills for people with a disability, providing jobs and training in one of our four businesses, APG (horticulture & grounds maintenance), Bedford Packaging, Bedford Furniture and Bedford Hospitality, or in the open workforce through Career Systems.
Kumi is just like any other 20 year old. She has a caring, sweet nature; she’s energetic and enthusiastic and has a real passion for life. Kumi also has an intellectual disability which, until a year ago, stopped her from living her life to the fullest.
At that time Kumi became a member of BCA (Bedford Community Access). BCA is part of the Bedford Day Option programme which offers a variety of recreational and developmental activities for people with moderate to high support needs who are not ready or unable to enter the work force.
Since joining BCA Kumi’s life has changed dramatically. She is now learning new skills which many people take for granted, such as doing her own hair and trying new styles. Kumi is also learning how to go shopping and to socialise more with others. Kumi is a keen member of the art programme and has used her creative energy to produce some wonderful pieces of art that have been displayed at Marion City Council and also at the Royal Show.
BCA has enabled Kumi to form great friendships and, for the first time in her life, she is really looking forward to a brighter future... a future where she can use her abilities to increase her independence and achieve her full potential.
There are many people like Kumi who just need a chance. A chance to be who they are and to show the world that having a disability doesn’t need to stop them!
Bedford was declared the winner of the Innovation Award for large business services at the inaugural national Business Service Excellence Awards, at the 2008 National Disability Services Employment Forum in Brisbane.

Bedford will help provide better outcomes for people with a disability in the South-East as a result of its upcoming merge with regional disability service provider Millicent Work Option Centre (MWOC).
At its largest ever Awards Day, Bedford celebrated the achievements of people with a disability on 11 June at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
