Accredited Training with TAFE SA
Every initiative undertaken by Bedford is aimed at creating employment opportunities, improving life skills and building the confidence and self-esteem of people with a disability.
All of these objectives depend on a process of learning and the provision of effective training programmes, delivered in real business settings so employees are better prepared to contribute to their workplace, family and community.
We are currently in the fourth year of our Vocational Training and Education partnership with TAFE SA, which offers course certificates I, II and III in Hospitality, Furnishing, Horticulture and Business Administration. Specific short courses such as plant identification, stock control and telephone etiquette are also delivered through this collaboration. So far, over 300 Bedford employees have participated in these courses and Bedford now offers employees a greater variety of nationally accredited qualifications than ever before.
In-house and short course initiatives also help employees develop a range of skills important for independent living. These include numeracy and literacy, personal safety, health and hygiene, working with others, teamwork, communication skills, preparation for ‘L’ plates, and fire safety in the home.
Employees also benefit from a variety of sessions delivered by Government agencies such as SHINE (Sexual Health Information Networking & Education) and Disability SA.
All of Bedford’s employees have benefited from some aspect of the training programmes on offer, with many securing and retaining open employment as a result. The range and quality of Bedford’s training was recognised when it was awarded the Employer of the Year in 2003 by DFEEST (the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology).
